Victor Martinez hasn’t caught since Aug. 4, and might not again this season. So without Santos, Alex Avila would be the only catcher on the playoff roster. Risky? Nah. If Avila caught nearly every game in the regular season, he can in the postseason, when days off are plentiful. So Santos really wouldn’t serve much purpose – he has little pinch-running or pinch-hitting value. If Avila were to get hurt, Brandon Inge or Don Kelly could fill in mid-game, and the Tigers could add Santos the following day.
