Even with Don Kelly – another left-handed-hitting outfielder – on the playoff roster, Dirks has some value. As the ballclub’s second-best defensive outfielder, behind only Austin Jackson, he’s the ideal defensive replacement for Magglio Ordonez or Delmon Young. He’s also one of the few Tigers with some decent speed, so there could be plenty of pinch-running opportunities. He might not bat much, though; while he showed some pop earlier in the season, he hasn’t hit much since his call-up (.179).
