Boom times, hard times in Highland Park

More than 70 vacant stores were counted near Woodward and Hamilton on Dec. 11, 1957. Census figures show a drop from 50,810 to 46,393 in the decade that ended in 1950. The block of stores is on Woodward, north of Manchester, opposite the Ford plant.
