Grocery auctions draw consumers in search of bargains
From left, Don and Betty Egler and Carolyn Brown look on while Carolyn's husband Jim Brown bids on some food. Both couples are from Ohio. The bidding process at auctions goes like this: Customers jockey for, say, a can of green beans, and the top bidder can select as many cans in the crate at the winning price. If there are cans left over, the next highest bidder can claim them at the same price, and then the next after that.
