Grocery auctions draw consumers in search of bargains
Jim Slaughterbeck of Temperance auctions off some food Saturday, April 11, 2009, at the Ottawa Lake Auction House in Ottawa Lake. Once the turf of penny-pinching seniors and operators of group and foster homes, these weekend auctions are now drawing a broader customer base: single moms, laid-off dads and household earners who are trying to stretch tight budgets. All are seeking discounts deeper than retail can offer, and buyers are willing to take their chances on goods that are sometimes past the sell-by date.
