President Abraham Lincoln stands on the Capitol steps during his inauguration in Washington, D.C., on March 4, 1861. Little more than a month later, on April 12, 1861, the first shot was fired at Fort Sumter and the nation was plunged into the Civil War. By the time the war ended in 1865, more than 600,000 combatants would lose their lives.
